Sources suggest that this symbol is an ancient pro - bulgarian rune dating back to the 7th century AD. It represents the number '7' - the seven days of the week and the seven known back then planets - Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn and the Sun. It was used as a calendar and to predict the outcome of important events. 

During ancient times many civilizations including the Bulgarians honored the stars, and recognized the sun as divine. Without it life would not exist. He was the epitome, a personification of nature, its elements and the cosmos, a part of which we all are.
