Malyovitsa
The Malyovitsa region is situated 100km from Sofia and is the cradle of Bulgarian rock climbing and mountaineering. In the last 15 years, Malyovitsa region has become very attractive rock-climbing district with the possibilities it gives for mountaineering and sport rock climbing.
Some of the interesting walls and summits are: Zliya Zab (200 m. wall with one of the most famous climbing routes in the country — Vezhdite), Dvuglav (a 450 m. high wall, with climbing routes often over 500 m. long), Iglata, Dyavolski Igli (several aretes with the hardest climbs in the region), Ushite and others. A wall that is available for not so experienced rock-climbers is "Kuklata". It is situated across Malyovitsa hut, 10 minutes walk, and the main part of its tours is bolted.
Vratsa
Vratsa is located 120km from Sofia and offers over 350 different climbing routes with various difficulties. It hosts regularly competitions attracting many climbers from Europe and the world.
Stara Planina has unique geological features. The rocks in Vratsa region are composed of Jurassic and Cretaceous limestone, whose strata are in general upright. Due to the tectonic processes there are typical forms like corners and cracks. The natural processes that occur mold the rock relief making it interesting and diverse. This creates favorable conditions for climbing and depending on your taste and preferences you can choose between climbing overhanging sport routes up to 8c and traditional routes up to 400 m long.
Lakatnik
Lakatnik is located one hour drive from Sofia in the Iskar river gorge. The cliffs in the area are composed of sandstone and limestone , which over the years and weathering have acquired various shapes and have a very well-developed karst. In the limestone layers there are over 100 caves and chasms , the longest of which is a natural landmark - the "Dark Hole" - 9 km long.
Lakatnishki rocks are very popular climbing site - in the area there are 6 regions with over 350 routes of varying difficulty . The most popular are Vrazhite holes and Alpine meadow. Vrazhite holes are located in the canyon Proboinitsa - a tributary of the Iskar. The site is ideal for climbing - for both beginners and advanced climbers.
If you are new to rock climbing you can try out the climbing walls in Sofia or the Via Ferrata and Evil Tooth peak in Malyovitsa. There are a wide range of routes and boulders suitable for beginners and advanced climbers.
