DESCRIPTION:

 

One of the largest karst areas in Bulgaria - Karlukovo gorge full of precipices , rock bridges, arches and holes - many of which mapped. With more than 280 caves, some of them - abysses, 3 rock monasteries, interesting rock formations located in Northern Bulgaria, one and a half hours drive from Sofia. It is - the - longest tunnel cave in the country - 262 meters long, declared a natural landmark of great significance in 1962. The cave is naturally lit, due to erosion of the ceiling which eventually led to the forming of the “Eyes of God” phenomenon - two almost equal sized holes in the shape of eyes. The cave itself resembles a large stone bridge over 300m. long and at its highest point over 42m. tall.

Near the region of Karlukovo the remains of two carved in the stone churches can be found – St. Marina and St. Posrebrenitsi also included in the tour. The area is remarkably beautiful especially during spring/summer season. The cave can be visited throughout the entire year and it offers rock climbing routes for experienced climbers.

This tour is suitable for those who like to enjoy beautiful nature combined with some historical monuments. The cave has been used numerous times for a stage on multiple film productions. There will be some effort getting down and then out of the cave, but there are no specific requirements or skills needed in order to explore the cave.

SCHEDULE:

 

We will head off early in the morning from Sofia; time of departure will be discussed prior. The cave is located around one and a half hours drive from Sofia. We will explore the cave and then we will have lunch at the nearby restaurant, where you can try traditional Bulgarian cuisine and wines. We will continue our tour to the St. Marina & St. Posrebrenitsi church and head back to Sofia. Duration of tour including traveling is 7-8 hours.

 

DON'T FORGET:

 

Make sure you bring warm clothes regardless of season, rubber boots or high above the ankle if rainy, sunscreen lotion, camera and a smile.

Avoid using new unbroken boots, pack light, bring only what you really need, wear loose clothing, stay well hydrated, stretch, eat strong breakfast prior to hike.
